Terpenes, also eminently known as Terpenoid or terps, are a naturally occurring secret component behind the soothing, therapeutic, and euphoric aromas. The unique flavor, taste, and smell are always naturally induced with the help of this natural gift called Terpenes.

If we talk about Cannabis, the natural, earthy scent of this plant is because of terpenes. This smell is therapeutic when a cannabis plant is thriving in fields and is also very soothing when converted into essential oil.

Researchers say that the terpenes even help the plant’s development with their pungent smell by repelling predators and pollinators. How cool is that!

Terpenes interact synergistically with THC and affect the psychoactive area of our brain with its earthy smell. In this way, it delivers a calming effect to the mind with the woody and herbal fragrance.

Well, since they are widely associated with the Cannabis plant, the general perception is that they cause high too. But, their scale of therapeutic effect on the mind varies from calming to energetic but not high. They are considered psychoactive only because they affect the brain but in a different manner than THC.

However, manufacturers are getting creative and making full use of these addictive properties of Terpenes by combining them with THC in their products. This makes the final product more impactful.

Terpenes in Daily Life

Since Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds in plants, this shouldn’t amaze us that the foods we eat daily also contain terpenes. Although the quantity may be low, yet it is there.

For example, Mangoes! Mangoes are flavorful and aromatic. This indicates that the terpene is abundant in Mangoes. Mangoes are also rich in Myrcene, responsible for anxiolytic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Similarly, Apple, lemon, oranges, citrus fruits, broccoli, lavender, etc., contain terpenes in them, and undoubtedly these fruits are luscious and have a strong aroma.

Other than fruits and vegetables, these spices also contain terpenes.

If we look at our daily food items with a critical eye, we will find traces of terpenes in almost all flavorful and aromatic herbs, fruits, and spices, as this chemical is not artificial. This occurs naturally and makes our food delicious.

Terpenes also have various health benefits, such as they improve immune functions by reducing inflammation. Terpenes are also the best aid to insomnia. The calming smell of lavender helps with sleep issues, migraines, fatigue, and headaches. That’s all because of terpenes.

Peppermint oil, for example, contains potent terpenes that can aid with bodily issues. Similarly, applying peppermint oil topically can momentarily relieve muscle discomfort pain.

Just like other naturally occurring chemicals like cannabinoids, terpenes are also under research process. But it is clear from anecdotal evidence that they indeed have therapeutic properties.
